Peddling in charity cash

Zach Messinger, from the Black Country, completed 40 miles of cycling to raise an incredible £400 for Canine Partners as part of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The 14-year-old said: “I first got into cycling during lockdown when I went out on bike rides along the canal towpaths with my family. We usually ride around 20 miles but for my sponsored cycle ride I wanted to push myself so I decided to double this distance and ride further than I have before.”

Zach was joined by his dad, Darren, and brother, Adam, cycling on the canal towpaths to the river at Stourport-on-Severn and back during his school summer holiday (on 1 August 2022), cycling for 5 and a half hours in total.

Zach added: “It took 3 hours on the way back as it’s all uphill, plus my bike got stuck in a high gear towards the end.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored me.”

Zach’s fundraising challenge was inspired by his Godparents, who are Fosterer volunteers for the charity and rehomed a canine partner puppy who was unable to progress with her training.

“I like to hear about how they are helping to look after dogs who are in training to become canine partners” Zach said.
