Arlington Bluebell Walk 2023

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Ruth Narracott and her army of volunteers for raising a fantastic amount of money from the Arlington Bluebell Walk in East Sussex on 6 and 7 May 2023.

They had over 400 visitors over the two days and raised a staggering £3,082 (and counting!) for Canine Partners.

The dog-friendly walk through the bluebells included seven different routes, including a wheelchair-friendly gravelled route through ancient oak woods. Refreshments were available at the end from the café with all proceeds coming to Canine Partners across the weekend.

We are so grateful for this wonderful support and cannot thank you enough. Our supporters are the reason we are able to continue training our fantastic dogs and transform lives.

Canine Partners this Spring

A right royal occasion

Canine Partners were honoured to receive an invitation for staff to attend HM King Charles’ Coronation Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on 9 May.

8,000 guests were welcomed to the garden in recognition of their public service and charity or community work. The Garden Party was hosted, on behalf of The King, by The Prince of Wales and was attended by several royals including our Patron, The Duke of Gloucester.

Staff who wanted to attend put their names in a hat and the four lucky attendees, Lucy, Anita, Sophie and Jenna, were selected at random by Demo Dog, Daisie.

Lucy said: “We got to enjoy the Buckingham Palace Gardens, eat lovely food (and ice-cream!), listen to the military bands and meet our patron, as well as amazing people from all walks of life and hear their stories of how they were invited. It was also lovely to meet colleagues I’d worked with but hadn’t met in person. Thank you so much – a truly wonderful memory to treasure.”

BBC Breakfast

We were thrilled to be invited onto BBC Breakfast, following the wonderful interview that partner Susan Holmes with canine partner Vinnie, gave to BBC Radio Cumbria and BBC Look North at the end of April.

Advanced Trainer Sophie and Demo Dog Fiona had a fantastic time talking about our urgent need for volunteers and demonstrating some of the amazing tasks that can be life-changing for a partner.

Sophie said: “It was a great experience to represent Canine Partners on BBC Breakfast and share more about the amazing work our charity does. Fiona was a natural in front of the camera and a real credit to us all – I’m very proud of her!”

A huge thank you to everyone who tuned in and shared the coverage!

Southern Training Centre farewell

We welcomed our community on-site at the end of April for a final opportunity to connect, reminisce and say farewell to our Southern Training Centre. It was wonderful to see so many faces and hear wonderful memories and stories. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us – we hope you enjoy these photos from the event.

Christmas Carol Series

We hosted three Carol Services at three beautiful locations, to celebrate Christmas 2022. We were supported by many generous donors and supporters who supported us in many different ways. Our talented Demonstration teams showcased the skills of our amazing dogs, to the delight of everyone who attended.

Our particular thanks go to David Wilson Homes, Headline Sponsors of the Edensor Carol Service, Purina, Headline Sponsors of the London Carol Service and Pets Corner, Headline Sponsors of Arundel Carol Service.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended our carol services. Your commitment in joining us for these events, particularly during the very cold weather, is hugely appreciated and thanks to your support, they were truly magical occasions.

Our first carol service, on 7 December, was at St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge, London. This was a new venue for us this year and our sincere thanks go to the team at St Paul’s Church, Amanda Wakeley, OBE for her wonderful reading, and to HRH Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO for giving his time to join us for the evening.  Special thanks too, to our dedicated fundraiser Sarah Cleaver, who secured so many wonderful supporters such as Wild at Heart, Pet Pavilion, Berry Bros & Rudd, The Lady, The Dog House, White Coco, Country & Town House, WagWorks, Dundas Lifestyle, Auriens, Canaccord, Bamford Ltd, Jigsaw and Waitrose Belgravia.

For our second carol service, on 9 December, we were delighted to return to St Peter’s Church, Edensor, for a wonderful evening of celebration.

Our final carol service, on 15 December, was in the atmospheric surroundings of Arundel Cathedral.  This service has become a firmly established tradition with the Cathedral and our community and our thanks to everyone who joined us at this sold out event.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge is back for 2020

For one week only, any donations made online via The Big Give website will be DOUBLED until we reach our fundraising target of £110,000.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2020 is more important to our fundraising than ever since the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been that we have had to pause or cancel so many of our events and activities this year. We have had to adjust our ways of working to ensure we are Covid-safe, as well as adapting our methods of partnering assistance dogs with people living with physical disabilities to keep our clients, staff, volunteers and supporters safe.

The funds we raise during The Big Give Christmas Challenge will enable us to:

  • Continue training our assistance dogs to help as many people living with physical disabilities as possible in the coming year.
  • Ensure all our clients receive the highest possible levels of service and safety whilst in our care, adhering to all health and safeguarding measures required in a world with Covid-19 in it.
  • Secure the future of Canine Partners financially, following the shortfall in income caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Give hope to the people waiting to be partnered with one of our amazing dogs until we have the funding in place.
  • Providing suitable equipment for our frontline teams to work safely and in confidence with the vulnerable adults we help and giving our volunteers the tools they need to support these services.

When you donate from midday on Tuesday 1 December to midday on Tuesday 8 December, the money will be DOUBLED by our two champions, Candis Club and Colonel Alan Jukes, who have pledged to match your donation.

The incredible ability of our supporters to dig deep at the end of what has been a deeply difficult year, will mean we can go into 2021 with renewed hope and confidence that we can keep training dogs for future partnerships. A heartfelt thank you for supporting Canine Partners during The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2020.

Can you help us to fund new partnerships created in 2021? Please donate via The Big Give’s website from midday on Tuesday 1 December to midday on Tuesday 8 December.  Find out more here.

Looking back on 30 years by Canine Partners’ Co-founder, Dr Elizabeth Ormerod

Since then we have created over 880 partnerships, volunteering numbers have grown to over 1,050 and we have expanded northwards by opening our Midlands Training Centre in Leicestershire.

Here, Dr Ormerod looks back on the past 30 years and how far the charity has come since 1990.

“It is now 30 years since the official founding of Canine Partners, a programme that represents the epitome of the human-companion animal bond.  I am deeply privileged to have been involved in its development since 1986.

The history of Canine Partners began in 1983 when our co-founder, the late Anne Conway, attended “The Human-Pet Relationship”, an international conference in Vienna held to celebrate the 80th birthday of Nobel Laureate Professor Konrad Lorenz. There she the met Bonnie Bergin and the first assistance dog partnership to support someone with a serious physical disability. Anne was very impressed by the tasks undertaken by Abdul, a black Labrador, trained by Bonnie Bergin. Bonnie was the founder of Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), the first physical assistance dog programme in the world, based in California. Anne then continued to study other assistance dog programmes in the USA.

I first met Anne in 1986 at the human animal bond conference, “Living Together: People, Animals and the Environment” in Boston, Massachusetts.  By then there were a number of assistance dog programmes in the USA and several were represented at the conference. It was clear that these partnerships were very special. I was fortunate to be able to spend a few days in the company of several partnerships and was astonished by what I witnessed these partnerships achieving. However, there was variance in standards of animal welfare, in dog selection, level of training and hence of the ability of the dogs to provide support.  Anne and I knew that such programmes would be introduced to the UK and that it was important this be done with careful planning, especially in relation to the welfare of both sides of the partnerships.

We researched existing programmes in the USA and met Bonnie Bergin again at a conference in Florida. Bonnie suggested we link up with the first assistance dog programme in Europe as their founding trainer Hugo Baardman had been trained at CCI in California. It was a good fit.  They shared our vision of having a programme which is respectful to everyone and held the welfare of the dogs as paramount. Study visits to the Netherlands followed and they trained our Founding trainer, the highly acclaimed Nina Bondarenko.

Establishing Canine Partners was not easy. Anne’s motto was “Perfect Planning Prevents Problems!” and everything was indeed planned down to minute detail. Anne also helped Lesley Scott Ordish to develop PAT Dogs and Lesley helped us to develop Canine Partners. Both Anne and Lesley were also appointed as Vice Presidents of Canine Partners.

An early task was to establish a multi-disciplinary board. It is essential in human-animal interaction programmes to have expertise from human health as well as from animal health and animal behaviour to ensure that the welfare of both people and animals is optimal. Our animal expertise was soon complemented by Nicky Pendleton, an occupational therapist, whose input continues to be invaluable to Canine Partners as she is on the board of trustees.

Many dedicated people have supported Canine Partners over the years, and I am very grateful to all who are and have been involved.  Anne lived to see the charity as a well- established programme before her passing in 2004. She would be really thrilled to see how the programme has continued to flourish and expand.

It is hard to convey in words how a Canine Partner transforms lives. Human partners say that the emotional support provided by our dogs is as important as the tasks of daily living that they help them to accomplish.  Only through meeting partnerships and seeing these in action can one begin to understand how important these partnerships are and what they can achieve together.  Each time I meet Canine Partnerships I am still humbled and astonished.  It is very clear that until recently we humans have not fully appreciated the abilities of dogs and the importance of the human-animal bond in peoples’ lives.  Canine Partners has changed our perceptions of what is possible.”

#FitFor30Challenge – Lauren’s fundraising story

We are now over halfway through September, which means there is still plenty of time to complete the Canine Partners Fit For 30 Challenge! An event aimed at raising vital funds that will allow the charity to continue providing people like myself with life-changing assistance dogs.

Following the sudden decline in my physical health at the age of 19, I was not prepared for my mental health to also suffer as a result of my new “disabled” lifestyle. I felt as if I no longer had any dignity or privacy, due to the fact I had to have a carer with me at all times. But was during those darker days that I decided to apply for a canine partner, in the hope of regaining some independence. Little did I know just how much my life was about to change!

Fast forward to September 2020 and I will soon be celebrating my 3 year anniversary of being paired with canine partner Fliss. Not only has my quality of life drastically transformed during this time, due to the fact Fliss can help me get undressed, retrieve my medications, and press my emergency alarm amongst other things, but she has also given me the confidence and motivation to leave the house on my good days, whilst having someone to help me through the bad days by continually boosting my mental health.

Fliss has positively improved life for my family – something I naively didn’t expect. But thanks to her never-ending support, my mum and my partner, Felix, have also experienced a new lease of life. Providing them with the time to focus on their own passions, such as writing a book and creating a small business!

For regular updates from Felix, who is running 30 miles, along with an insight into my 30 minute roll along the beach with Fliss next week – you can follow our progress on social media or by visiting our website. Don’t forget – you can also share your own photos throughout the challenge using the hashtag #fitfor30challenge!
