Good luck to our At Home Superheroes!

Back in May, we asked our partnerships if anyone wanted to take part in the At Home Superheroes event to raise vital funds for Canine Partners.

As official Charity Friends of the Superhero Series, the UK’s one and only disability sports series, we were very excited to ask them to take part in the perfect mission to keep super-charged this summer – At Home Superheroes!

Participants of At Home Superheroes can take part as an individual, as a duo or as a team of 3, to complete distance that they determine, between the 15 June 2020 and 15 July 2020. The challenge can be completed anywhere (living room, garden, neighbourhood) and in any way (walk, run, push, wheel, canoe, swim).

Canine Partners would like to say a huge thank you and good luck to all of our At Home Superheroes taking part in the challenge over the next few weeks!

GP Kelly raises over £600 by shaving off 26cm of hair for The 2.6 Challenge

As a person with a disability and wheelchair user, and seeing the effect of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic through her work, Kelly wanted to raise money for Canine Partners, as she recognises the huge difference an assistance dog can make to someone’s life.

Kelly has been shortlisted for her own assistance dog and was going through the application process when COVID-19 began to spread.  As part of her application, she had previously visited one of our training centres and been amazed by the dedicated staff and aftercare that Canine Partners provides. Spurred on by the thought of not being able to progress and be partnered with a dog, Kelly decided to take part in The 2.6 Challenge, which was created to make up some of the money that would have been raised by runners in the London Marathon and to help save UK charities at a time when fundraising is more difficult.

Like many of our amazing supporters, Kelly knew that people may be struggling financially during these uncertain times, and originally set a goal of £100, but she smashed this target in 24 hours and raised over £600!

Kelly says,  “The chances are that there will be even more people with acquired disability in the post-COVID era because of the long term health effects of surviving the virus , so your services will be needed more than ever… We can only imagine the detriment of others with more significant disabilities than myself of not being partnered because of a lack of funds. This made it even more important for us to help.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2019

We’re excited to announce that we will once again be taking part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZcGpasd-t0

Canine Partners first took part in the match-funding challenge in 2016, raising over £60,000. Since then we have taken part every year, and in 2018 we raised over £100,000!

The Big Give Christmas Challenge is a way for your donation to go even further, with all donations DOUBLED by Champions who have pledged to match all donations until we reach our target. This means your generosity will go even further in our mission to transform the lives of people living with disabilities, by matching them with an amazing assistance dog.

Online supporters will be encouraged to help us raise the initial £45,000 which will then be matched to reach our 2019 target of £90,000. But the clock will be ticking, as the Challenge is for a limited time only.

The Challenge kicks off at 12pm on Tuesday 3 December (Donate during this time by visiting The Big Give [www.givingtuesday.org.uk]) and will close at 12pm on Tuesday 10 December.

During The Big Give Christmas Challenge, we will be encouraging all of our supporters to spread the word so that we can raise as much money as possible to reach our goal.

Stay tuned to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to be updated with the campaign’s progress as we strive to reach and maybe even exceed our target!

Please note: Donations through Facebook fundraising or our website donation page do not count towards The Big Give.

The ‘65 Degrees North’ service personnel support team to take on the Three Countries Challenge for Canine Partners

In September 2019 a group of 18 wounded, injured or sick service personnel will attempt to cycle over the highest Cols in the Pyrenees through three countries: France, Andorra and Spain. Their support team are raising vital funds for Canine Partners.

Starting in the small mountain town of Luchon, which sits in the middle of the Pyrenees, the team known as 65 Degrees North will cycle for six very hard days through some amazing countryside. With some members of the team having never ridden a road bike before, they have undertaken a rigorous training schedule to prepare them to ride for over six hours a day and up to an altitude of 7,800ft.

The support team raising vital funds for Canine Partners are cycling with the other members of 65 Degrees North who come from the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, the Mercian Regiment, the Royal Engineers, and the Army Small Arms School. The support team includes three vehicles, one ex-nurse and a Paramedic. Many of the cyclists are living with serious injuries, such as a Traumatic Brain Injury, and mental health  such as PTSD, making the Three Countries Challenge even more heroic and awe-inspiring.

65 Degrees North strongly believe in “Rehabilitation through adventure”, and offer wounded, injured and sick current and ex-servicemen and women the opportunity to participate in challenging, unique and arduous expeditions around the world. These experiences not only enhance the recovery of participants, but also enable them to inspire others as they acquire the confidence, desire and motivation to make a real difference to those who have been injured in combat.

A French paraglide challenge: Anne’s Fundraising Story

Anne, aged 79, decided to raise vital funds for the assistance dog charity that transformed her life by partnering her with canine partner Casey.

Anne, from Market Harborough, Leicestershire, is set to take on a paraglide challenge in France this August as part of her 80th birthday celebrations.

Of the blood-pumping challenge, Anne says:
“I want to support Canine Partners as I really believe in the work that they do. Casey is my second assistance dog through the charity and she means the absolute world to me.”

Anne, who turns 80 in October, was born with Cerebral palsy and has never been able to walk. She was partnered with canine partner Casey, a yellow Labrador X Golden Retriever, in April 2017.

“Being in a wheelchair can be quite lonely but now Casey gives me the confidence to get outside and other dog walkers actually speak to me. Casey is a very special dog and has become quite a celebrity in the small market town where I live.”

Tackling Tough Mudder in memory of a friend: Megan’s Fundraising Story

Megan, aged twenty-two, decided to raise vital funds in memory of her friend Jake by taking on the Tough Mudder challenge with her two siblings, Emily and Will.

My name is Megan and I’m part of a team that took part in the Tough Mudder London event in May this year to raise money for Canine Partners.

Tough Mudder is an 8-10 mile event with 25 obstacles which included swimming through ice cold water, wading through mud and even suffering electric shocks!

Myself and my two siblings Emily and Will wanted to raise money for Canine Partners in memory of our very close friend Jake who passed away in December 2017.

We chose Canine Partners as it is a charity that is very important to Jake’s family. His mum, Nicola, is a puppy parent currently looking after puppy in training Saffy and had Jake survived his accident, he would have likely needed an assistance dog.

We chose the Tough Mudder Challenge London West as this event was just the kind of thing Jake would have loved to do. He was very sport, “outdoorsy”, passionate about animals and most of all – fearless!

The event took place on Sunday 5 May 2019 and our team of five (our two friends Harry and Rachel also joined us), fought our way through it! It was very difficult, particularly as it was the coldest May bank holiday on record.

We did, however, manage to complete the challenge in 3 hours. It was without a doubt the hardest physical challenge I have ever undertaken!

Donate to Megan, Emily and Will’s JustGiving

So far Megan, Emily and Will have almost raised £3,000 through our JustGiving! You can still donate now by visiting the JustGiving page.

Trekking 500 miles across northern Spain to change lives: Tim’s Fundraising Story

Tim Scott from Pembury in Kent is preparing to take on Camino de Santiago de Compostela, a 500-mile trek across northern Spain to raise vital funds for the charity that provided him with his assistance dog, Elliott. Tim is a 53-year-old tetraplegic who was matched with Elliott in June 2015.

As a way to give back to the charities that have helped him, including Canine Partners, Tim will be taking on the sponsored push in September 2020, starting from from St Jean Pied de Port in south-west France before crossing the border into Spain, going over the Pyrenees mountains and finishing in Santiago de Compostela near the coast.

In 2009, Tim was in a road traffic accident where a car knocked him off his motorbike, causing him to slide across the ground and hit his head on a concrete bollard. It resulted in him breaking 11 vertebrae, his sternum, punctured lungs and a broken pelvis, followed by a 10-month hospital stay.

“Before my accident, I had my own company, I was a workaholic and very sporty. I enjoyed holidays, going out and enjoying myself with my family,”

“All of a sudden I was stuck at home doing nothing and I got very depressed.”

Tim is aiming to raise enough to create another partnership like his – £20,000. He wants to let someone else benefit from what he has gained from having a canine partner in his life.

“Elliott has been able to give me my life back – to be able to live it and to be able to go out and enjoy it,” he says.

“I can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like without Elliott, he is one of the family.”

The £20,000 covers the costs from the selection of the puppy all the way through to retirement at around 10 years old.

He will be completing this incredibly tough challenge using his “Mountain Trike” wheelchair. The training will be tough.

“I think when I come to next year and it starts getting closer to the time, it’s going to be hard. It’s in my own hands. If I don’t push myself and I don’t train, then I will struggle. It’s up to me and within my own destiny to be able to make it work.”

Tim Scott sadly passed away in November 2019. However, his son and nephew are taking on this incredible challenge in his place and you can still donate to his fundraising page in his memory here: www.tim-elliott-camino.rocks or uk.virginmoneygiving.com/tim-elliott-camino.rocks

A 500 mile Irish bike ride: Bob’s fundraising story

Bob Hughes, from Burgess Hill, West Sussex, is set to take on a 500 mile bike ride in the Republic of Ireland to raise money for Canine Partners.

Bob is currently preparing to take on the incredible cycling challenge from Mizen Head, County Cork, to Malin Head, County Donegal, in May 2019.

“My wife and I have a dear friend who has applied for one of your assistance dogs and we just found out that she has been matched with one of their dogs,” says Bob, a retired 71-year-old.

“In 2017 I completed the Lands End to John O’Groats bike ride as a way to challenge myself, however it seemed silly not to raise money for charity so this time I have chosen a charity close to my heart – Canine Partners.”

“I have no particular time I want to do the bike ride in and no personal best in mind, but I hope to raise at least £500,” says Bob.

“I wanted to take this on firstly to push myself before I get too old, but raising money for charity also makes it worthwhile.”

Taking on The Big Five Marathon: Anna’s Fundraising Story

Anna Nicholas is preparing to take on her tenth marathon, and this time around she’s going all out by taking on the gruelling Big Five Marathon in South Africa!

Anna is a member of the Draycott Carol Service Committee and has provided her support in our annual carol service for the past 3 years.

So when it came to choosing a cause close to her heart as she does every year when running a marathon, she opted to support our mission to transform lives! She is also supporting a project in Bolivia to rebuild a school.

“It has been wonderful getting to know some of those incredible individuals who have benefited from your excellent charity and of course the adorable hero dogs,” says Anna.

So how did Anna get into marathon running in the first place?

“As an author and journalist, I spend many days hunched over the computer and when I began to suffer from a chronic lower back problem I decided to do something positive so I started running marathons for charity,” says Anna.

But The Big Five Marathon is her toughest challenge yet.

The Big Five Marathon is held on 22 June on a private reserve called Entebani, around 4 and a half hours from Johannesburg. There will be around 300 runners participating, and the 42km course involves rough running in hot conditions in high altitude – to say it will be gruelling is an understatement!

The course also includes a mountain of deep sand, and runners will be racing passed the Big Five animals – African elephants, Black rhinoceros, African buffalos, lions and African leopards, as well as a host of other wildlife native to the area.

“I have never done such a tough run so I really hope I make it to the finish. Certainly, I will do my utmost to finish the course providing I’m not eaten on the way!” says Anna.
