This Remembrance Day, Canine Partners is paying tribute to the veterans whose lives have been transformed through the support of our assistance dogs.

We’re proud to help veterans with physical disabilities live more independent and fulfilling lives. Our amazing dogs support with everyday tasks, from picking up dropped items to loading the washing machine, but they also provide confidence, reassurance and companionship to those who have served.

We currently have 15 British veterans partnered with one of our specially trained dogs, including Royal Navy veteran Stephen Brookes.

Steve’s Story

In 2008, Steve’s life changed completely when a motorbike accident left him paralysed from the shoulders down. His injuries meant he had to retire from the Royal Navy, where he had spent 15 years serving, and the transition to civilian life was incredibly difficult.

He spent over a year in hospital and undergoing rehabilitation, adapting to a new home and learning to navigate life in a wheelchair while relying on 24-hour care. “The loss of my military career was another significant blow,” Steve recalls. “It was a huge adjustment.”

During his rehabilitation, Steve was introduced to Canine Partners. “Considering the difficulties I was facing at the time, I was amazed by what the dogs could do.”

After applying Steve was partnered with Kizzie, a Labrador Retriever cross in 2011. “Kizzie wasn’t just a companion, she was my lifeline. With her by my side, I could be more involved in my daughters’ lives and my wife could be my wife again rather than my carer.”

Kizzie’s support went far beyond practical help. They gave Steve the confidence to go out independently, comfort during difficult moments, and reassurance at night when he struggled with pain or anxiety. “She allowed me to connect more deeply with my family and gave me a sense of purpose again.”

When Kizzie passed away in 2021, the loss was profound. “Life without Kizzie was challenging. Everyday tasks, like buying a coffee, required help – reminding me how much difference a canine partner makes. While I’m grateful for my care team, I missed the independence she gave me. But more than anything, I missed her.”

In February 2025, Steve was matched with canine partner, Ginny, who is helping him regain that independence once again. “Having a canine partner gives me freedom and confidence – I know I can rely on Ginny to help me live my life the way I want to. As I get older, the support I need will only increase, but Canine Partners lifetime commitment means I will always have a canine partner by my side.

This Remembrance Day

As we pause to remember those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, we also recognise the courage of veterans rebuilding their lives after injury or illness. Their strength and resilience continue long after their service ends, and at Canine Partners, we are proud to stand alongside them.
