Celebrating our volunteers: Meet Wendy

Posted 2 days ago

During Volunteers’ Week, we're shining a spotlight on the incredible individuals who dedicate their time and energy to making a difference. It’s even more special this year as we approach our 35th birthday!

“There’s no greater gift than the gift of time, and I’m proud to give mine to a charity that has given me so much.”

I’ve been a volunteer with Canine Partners for 15 years, not just because I’m passionate about the work they do, but because I’ve experienced firsthand the life-changing impact of these amazing dogs.

I was born with a rare genetic skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa Recessive Dystrophic. Even the slightest bump can cause my skin to blister and tear. As my condition worsened, everyday tasks became impossible and my husband Peter became my full-time carer. At one point, we took turns sleeping, just in case I stopped breathing during the night.

Then my first canine partner, Edward, came into our lives. Edward was a lifeline, giving me back my independence, confidence and freedom  He helped me get dressed, opened doors, fetched my crutches, and even stayed with me in hospital. Once, when I was choking, he alerted Peter in time to save my life – an act that earned him a PDSA Commendation.

When Edward retired, I was partnered with wonderful Carmen. Carmen brings calm, structure and the courage to face each day. She alerts Peter if I’m in danger and she even has her own emergency button to call an ambulance if needed. That kind of peace of mind is something we never imagined possible.

We’re still shielding as much as we can, and for four years we only visited hospitals and doctor’s surgeries. It would have been so easy to shut ourselves away completely, but you can’t do that when you’ve got a dog. Carmen gives us a reason to get up, go outside and stay connected to the world. She’s kept us going. She’s been our sanity.

As a Speaker volunteer for Canine Partners, I share my story to help others understand how vital these dogs are. It’s my way of saying thank you to Canine Partners for giving me my life back. There’s no greater gift than the gift of time, and I’m proud to give mine to a charity that has given me so much. These amazing dogs open the doors, but it’s Canine Partners who hold the keys.
