Celebrating our volunteers: Meet Mel

During Volunteers’ Week, we're shining a spotlight on the incredible individuals who dedicate their time and energy to making a difference. It’s even more special this year as we approach our 35th birthday!

“To anyone thinking about volunteering for Canine Partners, my advice is simple – do it! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
My journey with the charity started when I met Jane and her canine partner , Chico, at Church. I instantly fell in love with Chico and saw the incredible difference he made to Jane’s life every day. When Jane was running a tombola to raise funds for the charity, I offered to help and I never looked back! I found that I loved talking to people about the dogs and the amazing work of the charity. When there was a call for reception volunteers, Jane and I both volunteered. Since then, I’ve taken on remote admin work, trained to be a speaker, and helped Jane at talks.
What really drives me to volunteer is seeing the impact these canine partners have. Watching the difference a canine partner has had on Jane’s life made me want to help others experience the same bond. I love the people I’ve met through Canine Partners; everyone is so kind, and I’ve made some wonderful friends — it’s these special connections that make volunteering so rewarding.
The support I’ve received has been amazing. I’ve had training for everything I do and there’s always someone to ask if I need help. When I was unwell and couldn’t come in, the team sent me a card that really lifted my spirits – it was such a thoughtful gesture and made me feel truly cared for.
The experience has had a hugely positive impact on my life. Before volunteering, I struggled with severe depression and anxiety, but since joining Canine Partners my confidence has grown and I’ve felt more positive and able to cope. I’ve also developed new skills, especially in public speaking – something I’d not done before, but the training here has given me the confidence.
To anyone thinking about volunteering for Canine Partners, my advice is simple – do it! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
