Meet James and canine partner Spud

Read James and canine partner Spud's story!

During National Walk Your Dog Month, we’re highlighting how an assistance dog can restore confidence, independence and the joy of being outside.

For many people living with physical disabilities, the world beyond their front door can feel daunting. Leaving the house can seem overwhelming or even impossible. At Canine Partners, our partners tell us time and again that their assistance dogs have opened up their world, making the outdoors feel accessible again.

James (84) from Scotland, is one of those partners. Thanks to his canine partner, a black Labrador named Spud, he has been able to reconnect with his community and enjoy life beyond his front door once more.

Meet James

James from the Scottish Borders lives with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy, a condition that affects his mobility and dexterity. “I have no movement below the ankle and very limited use of my hands. I get very tired and suffer from joint pain. I can walk short distances with a stick, but I usually rely on a mobility scooter,” James explains.

While the physical challenges were significant, it was the loss of independence that James found hardest. “I fall quite a lot and struggle to pick things up. I’ve always been quite self-sufficient, so it was incredibly frustrating to feel like I had to rely on others for everything.”

Finding new confidence

In June 2018, after applying to Canine Partners, James was matched with Spud. Their bond was immediate, but the impact went far beyond practical support.

“Our partnership has exceeded all my expectations. It’s not just that he does things for me; it’s that the relationship involves mutual respect and trust.”

Before Spud arrived, going out alone felt daunting. Now, it’s part of everyday life. “Spud gives me the confidence to head out independently. We go on long walks, visit gardens, and we’ve even joined disabled rambling groups together. I feel so much better for being out and about in the fresh air with Spud.”

That confidence became vital during the pandemic. “Our partnership became even more important during lockdown. We spent many happy hours rambling together,” James recalls.

Beyond helping James navigate the world, Spud has brought structure and purpose to each day. “He allows me to do things I previously found difficult. I’m more self-sufficient now and don’t have to rely on others as much. It means my wife worries far less about leaving me on my own,” James says.

Spud has also opened doors socially. “People talk to me because of Spud, and that’s led to so many new friendships. After church every Sunday, there’s a queue of people waiting to say hello to us.”

Impact on family life

The partnership has brought reassurance not only to James, but to his wife, Anne. “Walking Spud every day has been hugely beneficial, not just physically, but for James’s mental health too. They’ve become well known in the community.” Anne explains.

Spud’s presence has also given Anne greater freedom. “James is much more comfortable going places without me, and I don’t have to be as vigilant. I feel much more comfortable leaving him athome while I go out for longer periods. James does fall quite often, but Spud is always there to help him. Knowing they have each other is a huge relief.”

Their daughter, Helen, has seen the difference too. “Spud has been a positive addition to my dad’s life in every way. He’s given him more independence to go out walking, and the help he provides around the house has been invaluable.”

Looking forward

Seven years on, James and Spud are an inseparable team. Having rediscovered his confidence and independence, James now volunteers as a fundraiser for Canine Partners, determined to help others experience the same life-changing support.

“Spud’s arrival allowed me to broaden my horizons and take responsibility for my life again. This charity has given me so much – I simply had to give something back.” James says.

Every partnership like James and Spud is funded entirely by the generosity of people like you. This National Walk Your Dog Month, please consider donating to help us train the next generation of life-changing dogs.
