Why teach ‘touch’?
- Teaching your dog to touch your hand or an object on command has many benefits:
- Builds focus: Helps your dog pay attention to you, even in distracting environments.
- Boosts confidence: Encourages shy or nervous dogs to interact with new things.
- Provides mental stimulation: Engages your dog’s brain and prevents boredom.
- Useful for training: Can be used to guide your dog into different positions or help with recall.
How to teach ‘touch’
- Hold out your hand: Present your open palm a few inches from your dog’s nose.
- Wait for curiosity: Most dogs will naturally sniff or investigate your hand.
- Reward immediately: As soon as your dog touches your hand with their nose, say “yes!” or use a training clicker and reward with a treat.
- Repeat and add a cue: Once your dog understands the action, introduce the word “touch” as they do it.
- Increase difficulty: Gradually move your hand further away or use different objects for your dog to target.
