Posted 12 hours ago
Looking for a simple, homemade treat for your dog? Whether you’re celebrating a ‘Gotcha Day’, marking a training milestone, or just want to show a little extra love, this peanut butter and banana dog cake is sure to get tails wagging.
At Canine Partners, reward-based training is at the heart of what we do. Positive reinforcement helps build confident, reliable assistance dogs and strong partnerships. While our incredible dogs follow carefully balanced diets, treats like this can be a great high-value training reward. This quick and easy recipe is perfect for occasional treat time at home.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe banana: Bananas are a natural source of potassium, fibre and vitamin B6. They can support digestive health and provide a little natural sweetness.
- 3 teaspoons xylitol-free peanut butter: Peanut butter contains healthy fats and protein, which can help provide energy.
- 1 medium egg: Eggs are a good source of high-quality protein and contain essential amino acids that support muscle development and overall health.
- Plain or wholemeal flour: Flour helps bind the ingredients together. Wholemeal flour provides slightly more fibre, while plain flour creates a lighter texture.
Important: Before you start, always check the ingredients on your peanut butter. It must not contain xylitol (sometimes called birch sugar), as this artificial sweetener is highly toxic to dogs. Choose a 100% natural peanut butter with no added sugar, salt or sweeteners.
Method
- Mash:In a bowl, mash the banana until smooth.
- Mix:Stir in the peanut butter and egg until fully combined.
- Thicken:Gradually add flour, mixing until you achieve a stiff, dough-like consistency.
- Cook:Spoon the mixture into a microwave-safe dish and microwave on full power for 2–3 minutes. Check the centre and microwave in 20–30 second bursts until just set.
- Cool:Allow the cake to cool fully before serving (this may require some patience from your four-legged taste tester!)
- Serve:Cut into small, bite-sized pieces suitable for your dog’s size.
Top tips for treat time
Everything in moderation: Although this recipe includes ingredients with some nutritional benefits, it should be enjoyed as an occasional treat alongside your dog’s normal balanced diet.
Great for training: Cut into bite-sized chunks and use as a high-value training reward to keep your dog focused and motivated.
For a crunchier biscuit-style treat: Roll the dough to 5mm thick, cut into small shapes and bake at 180°C (160°C fan) for around 15 minutes.
Freeze for later: These tasty treats freeze well, so you can save some for another day.
