Spina Bifida Awareness Month – Read Denise’s Story

Posted 18 hours ago

October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month, which aims to highlight the realities of living with this lifelong condition. For people living with Spina Bifida, even simple tasks can be exhausting, frustrating, and isolating.

Denise from Staffordshire knows this all too well. Born with Spina Bifida and living with osteoarthritis, her mobility is limited.

“I can only walk short distances with callipers and crutches and reply on a motorised wheelchair when I go out. I get tired quickly, drop things constantly, and struggle with even the smallest tasks. I felt trapped by my own body.”

After hearing about Canine Partners, Denise decided to apply.

“I wasn’t sure if I was disabled enough to qualify, but I figured I’d let the experts decide. When I met my first dog, Murray, in 2014 I fell in love instantly. He was eager to please, a quick learner, and made life so much easier right away.”

Murray gave Denise independence and practical support, helping with daily tasks and giving her the confidence to engage more with her community. After Murray retired, Denise was partnered with her current dog, Claro, a black Golden Retriever x Labrador.

“Claro has his own personality – calm, thoughtful, and always attentive. He and Murray have made my life easier and more manageable. They help me with tasks like picking up things, getting the washing out of the machine, and supporting me at night. But it’s more than that, they give me freedom and control over my day-to-day life.”

Claro and Murray have also provided essential vital emotional support for Denise.  “I don’t feel trapped or alone anymore. I have energy to volunteer, attend meetings, and be part of my community. They make life possible.”

Denise’s canine partners have transformed not just her day-to-day routines, but her confidence, social life and sense of independence. “I’m more active, more social, and more involved than I’ve ever been. I’ve even helped set up groups at my church. I finally feel like I can live life on my own terms.”
