Howl-oween tips

Halloween can be a fun time for the whole family, including your dog, but it’s important to keep them safe and happy during spooky season. Here are some tips to help your four-legged friend enjoy the festivities.

Introduce costumes and decorations slowly

Some dogs may feel curious or uneasy when they see people in costumes or new decorations appear in the home. Introduce these changes slowly in a calm, familiar environment, giving your dog plenty of time to investigate and get used to new sights, smells and textures.

Make sure they’re comfortable

Loud noises, costumes and trick or treaters can be overwhelming. Make sure your dog has a safe, quiet space with enrichment activities where they can relax if the excitement becomes too much.

Think twice before dressing up your dog

Costumes can be uncomfortable, restrictive and hot. Most dogs are happier letting their humans do the dressing up!

Keep treats out of paws reach

Chocolate and certain sweets (such as those that contain raisins or xylitol) are toxic to dogs, while others (e.g. lollipops) are a choaking hazard. Make sure treats are stored securely and remind children not to share their sweets with your four-legged friend.
