Wilma’s Kiltwalk challenge
Posted 16 hours ago
Wilma, from Edinburgh, has shared over six life-changing years with her Canine Partners assistance dog, Belle – an eight-year-old Labrador Retriever who has completely transformed Wilma’s life.
Motivated by the incredible difference Belle has made, Wilma is taking on the Edinburgh Kiltwalk to raise funds for Canine Partners.

I have lived with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, more commonly known as brittle bones, my entire life, which makes even everyday tasks a real challenge. Simple activities like getting dressed, carrying laundry, or reaching for items around the house can easily cause serious injury.
Despite this, I always tried to stay independent, competing as a swimmer and wheelchair racer for Scotland and Great Britain, and campaigning for disability rights worldwide. Over the years, my condition has gradually worsened, forcing me to give up many of the activities I once loved.
Then Belle came into my life and completely transformed it. From helping me stand safely, retrieving items and supporting my daily routines, to providing emotional support, Belle is always by my side. Her wagging tail and bright eyes tell me every day, “I’m here for you, what’s next?”
“We’re devoted to each other and she has transformed my life.”
Since being partnered with Belle, I’ve been able to live independently and actively, even as my condition has progressed. Inspired by everything she has given me, I’m taking on the Edinburgh Kiltwalk to raise funds for Canine Partners, so others can experience the life-changing impact of a canine partner.
“Belle is my everything and I want to help other disabled people benefit from having a canine partner.”
Sadly, since signing up for the 2025 Kiltwalk, Belle has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. While she can no longer perform her usual tasks, she continues to offer me invaluable emotional support and unwavering companionship. Every day with her is a gift, and knowing our time together will end sooner than expected is heartbreaking. I can’t imagine life without her by my side.
Wilma and Belle’s story the highlights incredible impact our canine partners can have and the dedication of these incredible dogs, who continue to do what they love for as long as they are able.
