If you’ve ever seen one of our future assistance dogs carefully balancing on a block, stretching into position, or stepping over obstacles, you might think they’re simply having fun. And you’d be right. But behind those playful moments is something much bigger.
Canine Partners is proud to be the only assistance dog charity in the UK currently providing every puppy in training with access to a bespoke preventative physiotherapy programme – ‘Puppy Pilates’.
Building strong foundations
Developed in partnership with specialist physiotherapists from ACPAT (The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy), Puppy Pilates helps us give our dogs the best possible start in life. It’s all part of our commitment to helping every dog stay happy, healthy and comfortable throughout their training, partnership, right through to retirement.
From an early age, all Canine Partners puppies receive physiotherapy assessments every three months from qualified animal physiotherapists, who monitor their movement and development as they grow.
What makes the programme unique is that every puppy is treated as an individual. Regular assessments allow our team to identify subtle changes early and provide tailored support where needed, ensuring each dog receives the support that’s right for them.
Why prevention matters
Assistance dogs perform incredible tasks every day. They open doors, retrieve dropped items, press buttons, help with dressing and undressing, and support disabled people to live with greater independence. Those tasks require strength, balance, flexibility and coordination.
Like any dog with an active role, assistance dogs need their bodies to work efficiently and comfortably.
“Our dogs go on to perform remarkable tasks throughout their lives, so giving them strong physical foundations from an early age is incredibly important. We know that investing in puppies’ wellbeing early can have lifelong benefits, which is why prevention sits at the heart of everything we do.”
Rather than treating problems when they develop, we’re taking a proactive approach to our dogs’ wellbeing from the very beginning. Much like how we vaccinate our dogs to prevent them becoming ill, rather than waiting to treat them if they become sick.
More than just exercises
Puppy Pilates goes much further than the physiotherapy sessions alone. We use the principles when working closely with dog volunteers, helping them support healthy development through positive experiences, varied movement and environments that encourage puppies to explore, learn and grow with confidence.
Sometimes the smallest changes can make a big difference. For example, adding mats to slippery floor surfaces can help prevent repeated slipping while puppies’ bodies are still developing.
“One of the most encouraging things we’ve seen is that these small preventative interventions really do add up. By supporting puppies during key stages of development, we’re seeing dogs arrive at assistance dog training stronger, more balanced and better prepared for the work ahead.”
The programme also gives Puppy Training Volunteers valuable insight into canine wellbeing, helping them better understand how to support a growing dog’s physical development.
Exciting results
Since introducing the preventative physiotherapy programme in 2022, we’ve seen encouraging improvements in puppies’ posture, movement and overall development as they progress through their training journey.
We’re incredibly proud of the positive impact the programme has had so far and the many success stories we’ve seen along the way. By investing in prevention, we’re helping future assistance dogs stay fit, strong and ready to change lives.
What can we all learn from Puppy Pilates?
While every dog is different, the principles behind the programme are simple:
- Encourage a variety of movement and opportunities to explore.
- Make time for enrichment activities and sniff-based games.
- Help dogs maintain a healthy weight.
- Consider whether surfaces around the home provide enough grip, especially for growing puppies.
- Seek professional advice early if something doesn’t look quite right.
When it comes to musculoskeletal health, prevention really is better than cure.
Supporting dogs for life
Puppy Pilates might look adorable on camera, and we’ll admit it often is.
But behind the balancing activities and wagging tails is something much bigger: a commitment to giving every assistance dog the strongest, healthiest foundation possible.
Because when our dogs thrive, they’re able to change lives for longer. And that’s something worth stretching for.
Every future assistance dog deserves the strongest possible start. With the support of our volunteers, expert trainers and specialist wellbeing teams, we’re helping more dogs build the foundations they need to change lives.
