Meet the amazing assistance dogs changing lives in Edinburgh
Canine Partners, the UK charity that transforms the lives of disabled people through highly trained assistance dogs, is inviting the Edinburgh community to a special open day to meet some life-changing canine companions.
The free event will take place at The Eric Liddell Community in Edinburgh on Friday 17 October 2025, from 12pm to 2pm. Attendees will have the chance to learn more about the charity’s work, watch a virtual demonstration of how the dogs are trained, and hear from Edinburgh resident Jane and her canine partner, Walshy.
Jane and Walshy’s story
Jane’s life was turned upside down in 2009 after contracting a spinal abscess and meningitis, which left her unable to walk. A later breast cancer diagnosis further impacted her independence and confidence.
A turning point came in 2013 when she was partnered with her first assistance dog, canine partner Damson. “With Damson by my side I no longer felt trapped at home in tears. Instead, I looked forward to each day,” said Jane.
After Damson passed away in 2024, Jane was partnered with her new canine partner, Walshy, who continues to provide invaluable support. “With Walshy, I feel like myself again. I smile more, I laugh more, and I don’t focus so much on what I can’t do – he gives me a reason to get up every morning,” she added.
Sarah McKean, Scotland Community Fundraiser at Canine Partners, said: “Jane’s story shows the incredible difference an assistance dog can make. From puppyhood to retirement, each partnership costs around £50,000, but the impact is priceless – these amazing dogs restore confidence, independence and offer constant companionship.
“To help create more life-changing partnerships like Jane and Walshy’s, we are bringing our work into local communities, training and matching our dogs right alongside the people they will help. I’m thrilled that our first community is here in Scotland.
“To celebrate we’re inviting the Edinburgh community to come along to our open day, meet our incredible dogs and discover how they can get involved in changing lives.”
